Trajanic Battle Pocket Square

Master of the Oxford Album (active 1512 –7), Trajanic battle (Arch of Constantine), c.1512–7 The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

  • 100% Silk
  • Hand Rolled
  • Designed and Printed in Britain
  • 42cm x 42cm

This drawing in pen and dark brown ink is from a collection of 63 mostly double-sided sheets, showing drawings after or inspired by, the antiques gathered in a twentieth-century vellum binding. The first section is dedicated to architecture, including drawings of highly decorative capitals, frequently drawn by Renaissance artists, and elevations and plans of buildings with a prevalence of triumphal arches.

A second section is dedicated to narrative compositions freely drawn from or inspired by, ancient sculpture, mostly reliefs, such as this detail of a battle scene from a continuous, dismembered frieze, originally part of a monument dedicated to the Emperor Trajan's victory over the Dacians, and then incorporated in the Arch of Constantine.
