Chūsenko Teitokuson Pocket Square

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), Chūsenko Teitokuson (Ding Desun) attacked by a snake on a mountain path, 1827–30The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

  • 100% Silk
  • Hand Rolled
  • Designed and Printed in Britain
  • 42cm x 42cm

Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a master of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock printing. His prints regularly feature large scale warrior figures within scenes of warlike encounters. These prints were often dramatic or melodramtic representations of courage and strength drawn from the Chinese novel Shuihu zhuan. The Chinese heroes were instantly distinguishable from Japanese warriors by their clothes, weapons and armour.

Chūsenko Teitokuson, depicted here, was a master of the use of a particular type of sword called a hisa, while riding a horse. The scene here depicts the battle of Kyūshū, where Chūsenko Teitokuson's army was attacked during a night raid. During the counterattack, Teitokuson was bitten by a poisonous snake, which eventually lead to a painful death. In this print, the enormous snake surrounds Teitokuson's body whilst he attempts to strike the snake with his sword with both hands.
